On the final day of the Winter Lights Festival Nikka Yuko celebrates Setsubun, the traditional Japanese day that divides the winter and spring seasons. Setsubun or bean-throwing festival is a celebration to drive away disease and evil spirits before the start of the planting and growing seasons. It is customary to throw roasted soybeans at an oni or demon, thus cleansing the household, temple or shrine for the coming year. 

Join us for Nikka Yuko Setsubun and yell "oni wa soto! fuku wa uchi!" ("demons out! luck in!) The Garden will be celebrating this evening with seasonal treats and games.

The Garden is particularly fragile during the winter months because branches can break easily in the cold temperature. The Garden's maintenance staff works incredibly hard on these living pieces of art. We ask that all guests stay to paths and designated areas, and to not touch or pull on vegetation.  

The Garden allows guests to bring hot beverages and concession treats into the Garden during the festival. However, we sincerely ask that guests do not bring beverages or snacks onto the Pavilion deck because the wood is susceptible to stains from even small spills.  

Please be courteous so that all guests may enjoy the Garden and the lights. Please no running on paths and be mindful of blocking paths and areas.
